Estimator

We are seeking an estimator with minimum 5 years’ experience for labor unit estimating of CSI Division 05500 Metal fabrications for commercial and high-rise building projects in the NY/NJ Metro area.

The candidate must be very detail oriented, organized, able to prioritize work with multiple projects on a day-to-day basis, able to meet deadlines, also have excellent computer and communications skills. We prefer a candidate with both shop and field experience, a degree in building construction, construction management, construction science, engineering, or architecture. However, will accept estimators with considerable construction experience. Applicants with a thorough knowledge of Miscellaneous Ironwork (stairs, rails, etc.) and some engineering knowledge are ideal.

Overview of the Role

The Estimator is a critical position within Papp Iron Works. The estimator is responsible for evaluating bid specifications and drawings and addendums and ensures all material is accounted for and appropriately priced. Estimates the material required and labor hours along with all other ancillary costs. Attention to detail and accuracy is of the utmost importance. Knowledge of steel fabrication and erection is necessary in order to accurately estimate labor units needed to for detailing, fabrication, trucking, equipment rental and field hours necessary to erect. The incumbent will submit bid proposals (estimates) on time and will provide the general contractor with any requested post bid pricing or clarifications. Attends descoping meetings with contractor, if requested, and consistently follows up on bid proposals seeking to be awarded the project.

Responsibilities

Be a Proactive Estimator

  • Reviews all addenda and other bid information prior to submission of bid.
  • Ensures that we have the proper coverage from subcontractors/vendors.
  • Shows creativity and resourcefulness to gain competitive advantage.
  • Submits bids by the bid deadline.
  • Enters all relevant information into software.

Project Knowledge

  • Review bid requirements thoroughly and asks follow-up question on every bid.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the scope for specific trades assigned.
  • Develops RFI’s and clarifications and ensure adequate subcontractor coverage and shows interest.
  • Ensure all work not included is specifically excluded.
  • Include value-engineering ideas where appropriate.

Follow up & Closing

  • Consistently follows up on submitted bids and budgets with General Contractor/Construction Manager to close business.

Project Turnover

  • Properly turns over bid documents and sub buyout information to Project Management in a timely manner. The goal is 100% of awarded projects turned over within 24 hours of notification.
  • Review drawings with Project Management team and highlight areas of concern.
  • Participates in job turnover meeting with Project Manager and Senior Management.
  • Review job cost with Project Management team and highlight any subs/material vendors that need to be awarded.

  • Build strong relationships with other departments within Papp Iron, including project management, detailing, accounting, and field superintendent.

Key Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of steel specific experience required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s Degree or higher preferred.
  • Ability to react well in a fast-paced environment & follow through on commitments.
  • Highly motivated and customer service-oriented mentality with ability to build relationships is a plus.
  • Highly detail oriented.
  • Ability to quickly learn product knowledge and processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize work.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Project required.
  • Must be self-motivated and punctual.

Compensation

  • $90k-$140k/year commensurate with experience.
